The Godox V1 is basically an updated version of the Godox Vii speedlite but with a round flash head instead of the more traditional rectangular flash head. The round-head offers the benefit of producing a more natural circular flash pattern.
The round head also has a magnetic surface which allows fast and convenient attachment of compatible magnetic accessories. The Godox V1 speedlite has a very similar specification to the Godox Vii speedlite except that the flash head is obviously round and it also has a shorter mm zoom range. The Godox Vii has a zoom range of mm. Build quality is very high.
Slight improvements have been made over the Godox Vii with a smoother and quieter head swivel and a better hotshoe lock rather than the locking ring. It is also powered by a mAh rechargeable Lithium-ion battery which gives a fast recycle speed of 1. The Godox V1 has a power output of 76Ws. This maybe due to the slightly wider spread the flash beam that you get from the circular head compared to a standard rectangular one.

Photographers can use the Godox V1 as an on-camera standalone TTL flash and as a 'wireless command center' for the company's other monolights and speedlights. When used as a master, the Godox V1 is able to control four wireless groups, and as a slave, this flash supports both intelligent and regular optical modes. The Godox V1 is currently listed as pre-release by Adorama.
Neither price or availability date are provided, though it is expected to be cheaper than the Profoto A1. Profoto has a better selection of gels, it would be great if they can fit on this Godox flash.
Profoto is trying to stop Godox as other sites are mentioning. A clear sign of Profoto is under huge pressure. Its sad as they have good products however despite that they still cant justify the high pricing.
So basically they are getting distrupted and the only weapon they have is create fear to stop others. The doesn't. I understand you can't have an AF assist lamp work with a mirrorless camera? The old Godox transmitter "works", in that it illuminates a continuous red pattern until the camera focuses, but the performance is so lousy and it looks so cheesy that I would just never use it.
I do not know why it's not possible for on-sensor PDAF to lock onto a short burst AF illumination, but this must be so, since nobody has figured it out :. This is how the flash AF assist lamps are able to improve AF dramatically in low light. In mirrorless, the AF is on the sensor which has an infrared filter, because the sensitivity range has to be reduced to visible light for true color photography.
So these AF assist lamps don't work. That's my understanding. The watch out profoto goes beyond simple reporting. The implication is that it is a threat to profoto. That may or may not be the case but there are no actual prices, no comparisons between the Godox and a Prophoto product, just a list of specs with short narrative.
The report does not make clear why Profoto needs to watch out, just leaves the reader to draw their own assumptions, likely cheaper than prophoto, similar or even better performance. IMHO a simple product announcement can just be exactly that.
Suggesting the Godox may be a threat to Profoto in rag Sunday newspaper style suggests product partiality and worse still partiality in the absence of a test comparison. This just simply undermines the value of the report. Well, the Godox will almost certainly be much, much cheaper. You will also probably be able to buy it on Amazon and get it the same or next day.In a move that potentially threw the Profoto marketing team into a frenzy, Godox recently released their V1 hotshoe flash.
Sporting a round fresnel head and all the features of a great flash system, the V1 is a hefty contender at its price-point. But, how does it perform? Let's check it out after the jump. As Godox have done with other flashes in the past, the V1 seems to have an incrementally better build in some areas — more on that below than previous models. While the body of the flash feels equally as well made as the VIIa few notable things have changed for the better.
The power switch, swivel for the head, and hotshoe lock all feel much better built now. In terms of size and weight, the V1 weighs slightly less than the VII at g and is slightly bulkier thanks to the round head. The body of the unit is slightly thinner than its older brother, however, giving it an overall more compact feel.
Godox have opted for a locking mechanism like those found in many other speedlights for the hotshoe this time around. The V1 can be locked or unlocked from the hotshoe with a simple button push and quarter turn of the locking mechanism rather than the endless turning of the locking rings on their old flashes.
It seems somewhat odd to mention the power switch as being an improvement. The improvement that I feel was most needed is the swivel for the head. The swivel on the VII was incredibly noisy in the front-to-back direction and difficult to rotate. The V1 has fixed both of these by dampening the movements. Overall, this makes for an experience you can trust quite a bit more. By far the best feature of this new design, though, this the ability to tilt the head backwards 7 degrees. This is great for bounce flash as you no longer need to swivel the head around degrees just to tilt it behind you.
While not being the answer to all the issues we have when using speedlights, it does offer some benefits over standard rectangular heads. However, there are a couple of downsides to this shape as well. Firstly, the benefits. The shape of the head produces a round beam, unlike the square beam produced by regular speedlight heads. With many of our modifiers being round in shape, this helps to fill them more evenly.
This is especially true for modifiers where the flash head faces forward, such as shoot-thru umbrellas. Take a look at the example below to see the difference in how the Godox VII and Godox V1 fill my cm umbrella when both are zoomed to 28mm. I was expecting a small difference but was actually quite surprised at how much of a difference using the whole surface of the umbrella made in this simple close-up portrait of my wife. Look carefully at the spread on her jeans and hair, and the subtle difference in falloff on her face. While not huge differences for many applications, this could be useful for those expecting a little more coverage from a large modifier and not wanting to carry bigger lights. The second benefit relates to the way light falls off at the edges of the beam.
It is much more uniform than the rectangular fresnel heads found on most speedlights. Below is a comparison of the beams from the Godox VII and V1 as they hit a while roughly one meter 3' away. As you can see, not only is the shape different, but the gradual falloff of the V1 offers a softer looking transition back into the non-lit areas of the image. The third benefit comes when using grids. By attaching a grid, we restrict the direction that our flash beam is able to travel in.
The round shape of the V1's beam offers the ability to create spotlight-style lighting just like a studio strobe with a reflector and grid would. The first downside is that the head is not able to zoom quite so much as a regular speedlight.
This could be an issue for photographers who use the flash on camera as coverage may not quite be enough on the wide and not concentrated enough on the long end. The second downside is that the shape of the head means it won't fit many speedlight specific modifiers.
Softboxes like SMDV's Speedbox series do not accommodate this shape, and despite the magnets being present in the head itself, MagMod's kit doesn't fit either.The Godox V1 is a unique take on the portable flash design.
Instead of the traditional rectangular flash head, it has a round head that produces a softer light spread and more pleasing light pattern than competing flashes. Does this bear out in real life? The short answer is yes…though with some limitations. I used identical settings shutters speed, ISOand an 85mm F1. Clearly the Godox delivered the far more nuanced lighting.
One has to remember, however, that this is still a very small light source putting out a lot of power 78Wsso there is a limit to how soft such light will be without modification.
The Godox V1 can either be used as a command unit to control a variety of other light products:. It can also be controlled as a wireless slave unit from a command unit on camera like the Godox X-Pro. This allows one to control multiple light units in a variety of ways and to get far more pleasing lighting results and also total control over the direction and intensity of the light.

One other advantage of the Godox V1 that I do want to highlight is its ability to position the flash head in a broader range of positions than competing units. Here are a few images of the flash unit itself, showing off the round head, the built-in modeling light which can be controlled off camera as welland thankfully! Two others areas are worth highlighting. The Godox V1 utilizes a proprietary lithium ion battery pack. The pros of this include that the battery pack delivers full power shots per charge, and, in my experience, delivers very stable power delivery. The downside is that if you are doing an intensive shoot a wedding, for exampleyou might need a battery replacement.
Good news is that the tiny charging cradle is USB-C powered, which means you could charge it off a portable power-bank on the fly if needed. The Godox V1 obviously gives you a lot of bounce angles, and if you are using the flash on camera and have something to bounce off of above or even behind, nowthis is a great approach:.
I included a few shots where I was lighting a mantle that a friend built for us. I wanted to highlight the rich color and the grain, and the V1 did a great job of providing the light I needed without blowing out the subject. Getting the flash off the camera gives you all kinds of options for lighting a scene. One final mix that I love is the getting the flash off camera on a standand then using one of my favorite light modifiers — the Lite Genius Super Scoop 3 — to help spread the light for a nice, natural group lighting that mixes well with the ambient light.

Lighting products tend not to get the same level of interest as Sony cameras or lenses but I think the controversy surrounding the Godox V1-S TTL Round Head Flash speedlight has made people more aware of it.
That said, this flash does a lot right and there is little to complain about. I wholeheartedly believe it is subjectively and objectively the best speedlight on the market regardless of price. Of course not. Every natural light source I can think of and nearly every large, man-made but natural looking softbox I can think of is round.
I believe a round headed speedlight is simply a natural progression and it would be a great shame if a patent prevents round head design. I doubt the internals of the two flashes are identical; if they were, the Profoto A1 would perform better. Let me know your thoughts on this and if you think patents take things too far :. I believe there is neoprene foam in-between the outer material, and interestingly the flash foot is kept on the outside of the case and not inside.
Inside the box is a USB-C charger, cable, the flash itself, a battery and the usual stuff. The included charger is brilliant as it accepts USB-C. The light changes colour from green, to red when the battery is inserted, back to green when it is fully charged.
It would be nice to see more LEDs to indicate charge; however, I like how lightweight it is and if more LEDs encroached on this, that would be a shame. From what I can establish using my Samsung charger, the current varies depending on the resistance of the two Lithium batteries housed inside the battery case.
First look and impressions of the Godox V1 round head speedlight
The battery claims 2. Once it starts to charge at about. I took the battery off charge momentarily so please discard most of what is shown on the display. That said and regardless of how accurate of a test this is, the charge current is clearly quite high relative to the voltage. For example, I will be able to charge this using a solar panel or power bank during the day and illuminate things at night with it. I understand I am being a bit technical here and this can irritate photographers… but anyone can read a spec sheet; I am trying to provide information that is not readily available :.
The point is, I am not expecting these batteries to expand and catch fire unlike a certain Samsung phone I bought and warned Samsung about. The red panel is well crafted. The front shocked me.
The hot-shoe is much, much faster to operate. I really wish my trigger had the same flick switch; I use that far more and rarely put my speedlight on the camera, haha. Enough about the physical design…. You can make your own menus of course and you can memorise where things are, but that either circumvents or masks an underlying problem.Hi all, I bought a Godox V1-S just few days ago, and all went well till now.
But since yesterday, it won't fire anymore. I mean if I had the shutter button, I hear the big, but no flash. I trigger it with my Xpro-S placed on my Sony a9 hotshoe, it responds, but no flash however!!! This convinced me that the flash is still working, even it doesn't fire. Any clue Guys? Any help would be appreciated. It looks like a lightning bolt.
Maybe you switched to a non-wireless or incompatible mode, changed to a different group, etc. See if there is a way to reset it to default settings. What colour is the flash LCD? Does the V1 fire from its test button? Does the V1 fire from the Xpro-S's test button?
Is the camera flash setting "Fill"? How is the V1 "responding" if it's not firing? Are you sure the channels match between the XPro and V1?
Are you trying to use the V1 within 1m of the XPro? I'm a woman. Thanks for your reply, So as stated in my above post, when I put the XPro on my a9 hotshoe and trigger it, the V1 emits a beep but no flash at all. The same happens when I use it alone, meaning when I activate the test button, it emits also a beep, but did not fire. Yes I put both the v1 and the XPro on the same channel. Also yes, the flash mode is on fill, and the most surprising is that when I mount the V1 on my a9 hotshoe and change i.
At the end it drives me crazy See if that helps, if not maybe updating the firmware may help. How does aperture change on the V1? AFAIK, there's no place on it that the camera aperture is displayed. What group is the V1 assigned to? How is the group set on the X-Pro?
Are you sure the V1 is in radio slave mode, not master mode? If you have a green backlight,but no antenna icon, it's in "on-camera" mode. If you have an antenna icon, but a green backlight, it's in radio master mode. The horizontal lightning icon button on the right cycles through the "syncing" modes.

Something very obvious tells me he hasn't even touched a Profoto A1 and base his review strictly on the price and no I don't own any Profoto. It's like thanks but no, thanks. I think I'll skip his clips for now on. I have no interest in opening the box and firing it at the wall a few times and calling that a review. So I just do what I have on hand. If you want a review of the Profoto, there are many other places on YouTube to find such a thing.
But just out of interest, did I not say enough nice things about the Profoto, or too many nice things? If only all that sarcasm could remove the fact that you are the one who introduced Profoto to your own Godox vs Godox commercial!

I don't want to take more of your working photographer time so goodbye and have a great babablabla. William Hicks, instead lurking with negative votes in the background, you should really get involved here if you have any problem with my replies.
I don't bite. But know that last year I was about to buy 2 Godox They seemed good for some precarious situations in some environment I shoot in at time. The only thing that stopped me is the fact that they don't have hyper sync.
Beside, it's becoming very clear with each new model that Godox is modeling it's line of product after Profoto. It's fine, but shaming continually Profoto on forums with the exclusive intention of shaming their pricing when Godox only copy them all the way is clearly not something I would find pride in.
Of all the gear I own, my most reviled and detested piece of gear is my Nikon SB flash.
